Wes Hoolahan's influence
With the English season entering its final quarter, the final positions of teams at both ends of the table are dominating the hearts and minds of fans and pundits alike. While Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal are battling it out for the top four positions, at the other end of the table, it's not unreasonable to assume that any team from Aston Villa in tenth on 34 points (at the time of writing) can be sucked into a relegation battle. While Norwich City appear relatively comfortable in thirteenth position, further investigation reveals how precarious it really is.
With a game more played than every team between them and the relegation zone, they have a real chance of dropping down the table without even playing. Added to that, they've scored the joint least amount of goals in the division, 26, along with 18th placed Cardiff and 19th placed Sunderland, who have three games in hand on the Canaries thanks to their run to the League Cup Final in February. In their 31 games, the East Anglian side have conceded 48 goals, two more than any other team outside the relegation zone. If that wasn't bad enough, their final four games are against Liverpool(H), Manchester United(A), Chelsea(A) and Arsenal(H) meaning they will more than likely need to be safe from relegation before these games kick off. At the moment, I think 36 points will secure Premier League football for another season, but anything can change in the next few weeks.
This has all amounted to a massive amount of pressure on the manager, former Irish international Chris Hughton, with fans on both sides of the Irish Channel questioning his omission of midfielder Wes Hoolahan. With conceivably only three games left to preserve their status in the Premier League, the evidence for Hughton to start Hoolahan in all of these games is compelling.
Of Norwich's 17 home games this season (including cup games), Hoolahan has only started six, winning three, and of the other eleven games, the Canaries have only won four. There are similar findings for Norwich's away games. Of their 16 games away from Carrow Road, Hoolahan has only started five, winning once. In the eleven games he has not started, Hughton's side have only won a single game, and have lost nine, compared to the three lost from five games with the Dubliner in the starting XI.
These finding are summarised in the table below
